The Low Carbon Cities plataform is inspired by the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as well as the recently adopted UNFCCC Paris Agreement, both of which stress the importance of cities to mitigate climate change.

The initiative promotes social mobilization for the collective construction of Low Carbon Cities through awareness and communication strategies, training, and promoting urban innovations in different sectors such as energy, transport, construction, industry or waste and resources. Within the project we promote tools that generate citizen ownership, participation, and cooperation between the public and private sectors. Our objective is: We are all part of the solution!

A Global Citizen-led Forum on Low Carbon Cities

This is the first global forum directed by citizens who are committed to building low carbon cities by reducing emissions in different sectors without compromising economic and social development.

For this first version in Medellín, Colombia – from 10-12 October 2016 – we aim to bring together more than 3,000 citizens, politicians, academics, urban leaders and change-makers from around the world. This event will tackle climate change from a localized and citizen- driven approach. The Forum will be carbon free.

Before the Forum takes place, various activities will be organized to place the importance of low carbon urban development on the public agenda and mindset. These activities will include workshops, pre-forums, trainings, open online discussions (google hangouts) with experts, and tactical urbanism activities in Colombia and the world.

What do we want to achieve with the Low Carbon Cities Forum?

  • Place the issue on the public agenda as an alternative to tackle climate change from a local and multi-stakeholder perspective that allows different sectors and actors to contribute to building low carbon societies.
  • Discuss and build a roadmap for Low Carbon Cities including tools, academic evidence, scalable projects, and a network of stakeholders willing to work on the issue.
  • Identify and promote sectoral and current initiatives to expand to other cities.
  • Share ideas and best practices that transcend geography, gender, culture, and social or professional backgrounds. We are all citizens that have a stake in building the Low Carbon City of the future!
  • Connect citizens across the globe to identify participatory urban strategies. We are all a part of the solution!

The Forum is designed within the Framework of the Low Carbon City Program, a long term initiative led by La Ciudad Verde which seeks to scale up low carbon solution in Latin American cities through academic evidence, low cost interventions, stakeholder involvement and citizen participation.
